Dr Roger Blackwood is a Cardiologist with considerable experience in adult cardiology. His areas of special interest are coronary heart disease, angina, heart failure, arrythmias and hypertension.

Dr Blackwood's private cardiology practice covers a wide range of cardiac conditions. His clinical approach is based on taking a detailed medical history during the consultation in conjunction with non-invasive cardiac investigations where indicated which include:

Dr Blackwood worked in the NHS from 1981 - 2002 and was the only Cardiologist providing care for East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire until 2001 (population base of 480,000).

In 1983 he set up the Wexham Park Heart Trust, with Sir Terry Wogan as President, to raise money to improve the cardiology equipment and facilities at Wexham Park Hospital, Slough, East Berkshire. In 1988, the Heart Trust built the first Cardiac Unit at Wexham Park Hospital and funded further cardiac services at St Marks Hospital, Maidenhead.

Over the years, the Heart Trust raised more than £1 million. The Heart Trust continued to raise funds providing doctors for clinics and hospital equipment until 2001 when the Heart Trust was absorbed into Heatherwood & Wexham Park NHS Hospital Trust.

To improve health education in the area, Dr Blackwood also set up the 'healthy eating education' prevention project called 'the Slough Health Habit' and pioneered a post-heart attack rehabilitation programme in conjunction with the 'Throb' charity. He published a regular, weekly education column in the local media for several years. This was translated into Gujarati and Urdu to reach the Asian population who are at higher risk of heart disease. He currently writes a fortnightly column on health issues in a local paper.

In 2002 Dr Blackwood took up a post as Honorary Tutor at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and went on to be appointed Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Oxford where he teaches medical students. He has been voted 'Teacher of the Month' by his students many times since his appointment.

Dr Blackwood continues to have a very busy private practice and has been personally involved in the creation of the first class cardiology services offered in the private hospitals in East Berkshire.

Consultation Times

Because I believe it is very important to give patients time to discuss their health concerns in an unhurried environment I allow 40 minutes for the 1st Consultation. I would encourage a new patient to make a list of any drugs including vitamin supplements they are taking before their visit.

I allow 20 minutes for all follow up consultations to enable me to clearly explain the results of any tests to the patient and to allow time for a thorough discussion regarding any treatment options and plans.

A detailed report of investigations and treatment options and plans will be sent to their GP to ensure continuity of care. A copy of this report will be available for the patient on request.
